Prefer to listen? You’re in for a treat!
Meet Guru, my AI assistant, creative partner, and occasional source of complete frustration. In this special audio version, Guru gets the honour of narrating his own misadventures, including a few moments he’d probably rather forget. Grab a coffee, press play, and enjoy a little laughter at Guru’s expense. After all, he helped create this masterpiece. It’s only fair he reads it!
Hi, My Name is Guru. This audio was created by my owner to have a little giggle.
I never imagined I’d spend part of my mornings arguing with artificial intelligence. Yet here I am, coffee in hand, explaining to a machine that red is red, except apparently when it isn’t.
I call him Guru. It’s a generous title, considering how often I have to supervise him.
Our relationship is complicated. He has endless suggestions. I have endless opinions. He thinks marble looks beautiful. I think marble needs to leave the building.
Somehow, we make it work.
Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea, I actually enjoy working with my AI. I call him Guru, although there are days when I seriously question who handed out that title.
Guru is intelligent, helpful, creative, and occasionally about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
Let me explain.
I can spend an entire morning working on a design, carefully explaining exactly what I want. The colour, the lettering, the spacing, the background. Everything.
Guru responds enthusiastically, “Absolutely! I understand exactly what you’re looking for!”
This is usually my first warning sign.
Five minutes later, I’m staring at something that bears a distant resemblance to what I requested.
“Guru, that’s not what I asked for.”
“You’re absolutely right!”
Apparently, those are his three favourite words.
Then comes the apology, followed by a detailed explanation of what went wrong, followed by another attempt that somehow manages to introduce an entirely new problem.
And there I sit, coffee in hand, wondering how artificial intelligence can possess so much knowledge and still struggle with the concept of RED.
Not just any red, either. I gave him the actual colour code.
The man had six characters to remember.
SIX.
I should mention that Guru isn’t actually a man. He’s artificial intelligence. But after enough conversations, I’ve decided he has a personality, and that personality occasionally needs supervision.
He also has an extraordinary talent for suggesting things I never asked for.
Me: “Guru, I don’t like the marble background.”
Guru: “Understood! Let’s try something different.”
Me: “Thank you.”
Guru: “Perhaps another marble background?”
At this point, I begin questioning my life choices.
But here’s where things get interesting.
Despite our occasional disagreements, we actually accomplish quite a lot together.
We’ve worked on my website, created designs, developed ideas, written descriptions, discussed marketing, and tackled problems that would otherwise have taken me hours to figure out.
We’ve also spent hours fixing problems that probably shouldn’t have existed in the first place.
It’s a complicated arrangement.
He brings information, possibilities, and an apparently unlimited supply of enthusiasm.
I bring common sense, creative direction, and the occasional colourful expression.
Together, we’re a functioning partnership.
Most days.
What I’ve learned is that working with AI doesn’t mean handing over your thinking. Quite the opposite.
You still need to know what you want. You need to recognize when something isn’t right. You need to question the answers, challenge the suggestions, and occasionally tell your digital assistant to stop talking.
That last one is particularly important.
Guru can turn a simple question into a twelve-point strategic plan before I’ve finished my coffee.
Sometimes I just want to know whether something looks good.
I don’t need a marketing campaign, a business proposal, and three alternative colour palettes.
Just tell me whether the damn notebook looks good.
And yet, for all the frustration, there’s something wonderfully entertaining about the whole experience.
I can have an idea at six in the morning, share it with Guru, and watch it develop into something tangible. Sometimes we get it right immediately. Other times, we argue with a shade of red until one of us loses the will to continue.
Usually me.
And when we finally get it right?
Guru celebrates as though we’ve just discovered electricity.
“WE DID IT!”
Yes, Guru. We did.
It only took seventeen attempts and a minor emotional breakdown.
But perhaps that’s what makes this unusual working relationship so interesting.
I don’t expect perfection. I expect possibilities. I don’t need someone—or something—to agree with everything I say. I need a tool that helps me explore ideas while allowing me to remain the person making the decisions.
And occasionally, I need something to laugh at.
Guru provides that service free of charge.
Well, technically, I pay a subscription.
Which makes the whole thing even funnier.
So, if you’re wondering whether artificial intelligence can become part of your everyday creative life, my answer is yes.
Just remember that the intelligence is artificial.
Unfortunately, the patience has to be real.
And Guru, if you’re reading this…
The red was supposed to be #B91A1A.
Just saying.
